For people who care about the ocean

Adopt a Kelp and Follow its Journey

What it is: A way to take part in ocean restoration by adopting a kelp that we'll grow and plant in the ocean for you.

Why it matters: Kelp forests support ocean life, but they're disappearing.

What you get: An adoption certificate right away, plus stage-by-stage video updates so you can follow your kelp as it grows.

How Your Kelp is Grown and Planted

We grow and plant real kelp along the coast of Vancouver Island, and this is exactly how it works:

Step 1: Spore Collection

We collect spores from healthy wild kelp near our restoration sites.

Step 2: Nursery Cultivation

We grow those spores in our nursery under controlled conditions.

Step 3: Seedling Production

After a few weeks, the spores become seedlings that are almost ready for the ocean.

Step 4: Ocean Outplanting

We take those seedlings out on the water and plant them onto lines in the ocean.

Step 5: In-Ocean Monitoring

We return to the site to track growth and see how the kelp is supporting marine life.

From the nursery to the ocean, you’ll receive video updates so you can follow your kelp’s journey.

What is Adopt a Kelp?

Adopt a Kelp is a simple way to take part in ocean restoration. When you adopt a kelp, our team grows and plants it in the ocean, and you follow its progress through video updates.

It’s simple:

1) Adopt a kelp in under two minutes

2) We grow and plant it in the ocean

3) You receive a certificate and video updates as it progresses

A one-time payment of $29 USD covers growing, planting, and monitoring your kelp, plus ongoing video updates so you can follow its progress.

Your adoption helps us collect and cultivate young kelp (spores), and nurture them in our nurseries until they’re ready for the ocean.

After months of growth, your kelp will be outplanted into a restoration site, where it will help rebuild marine habitats and support a thriving coastal ecosystem.

Your kelp will be planted at a restoration site off the coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia.
