Our Journey
West Coast Kelp was built to solve a simple problem: how to scale kelp restoration while building a viable coastal industry.
Rooted on the west coast and working alongside First Nations and community partners, we’ve grown from a small pilot nursery into a company delivering commercial-scale cultivation, restoration, and monitoring. The throughline remains the same: scientific rigour, dependable execution, and respect for the ocean and the people who steward it.
2022
Incorporated and built our pilot nursery on Vancouver Island. Ran initial restoration trials and developed cultivation methods that set the foundation for scale.
2023
Opened our commercial nursery and delivered our first seed to B.C. growers. Installed and now operate an Indigenous-owned kelp farm, and began long-term kelp forest monitoring with First Nations partners.
2024
Supported Indigenous-led kelp restoration projects and enabled four kelp farming businesses with high-quality seed and technical support. Connected permitted farm sites with restoration initiatives to move from research to implementation.
2025
Launched the Kelp Biobank to safeguard biodiversity and accelerate restoration. Expanded our portfolio of Indigenous-led projects across multiple sites. Grew the WCK team and capacity to deliver complex, multi-partner programs on time and to spec.
