What We Mean by "Kelp Seed"
“Kelp seed” refers to nursery-prepared material used to start cultivation.
We collect microscopic spores from local wild kelp, grow them into the gametophyte life stage in our nursery, then apply those gametophytes to spooled twine.
On the spool, gametophytes transition into juvenile sporophytes that are deployed at sea and grow to full size.
Ocean Ready Seed
At West Coast Kelp, we produce dependable starts in controlled nursery conditions so your lines establish quickly and evenly.
We provide planning support, seedling supply, and deployment. We also schedule production to match your deployment dates.
We currently supply seed to growers and partners across British Columbia. Whether you are launching a site or scaling production, our seed and support help you establish productive kelp habitat.

What Our Clients Say
Here's how our work is making a difference
West Coast Kelp has been a fundamental part of our kelp farm. We have worked with them for a few years now. We ordered kelp seed spools for some test lines at first and last year made a big bull kelp spool order to kick start the implementation of the first phase of our kelp farm.
WCK has been wonderful to work with and we are very happy with the kelp spools we get from them. We’re lucky to have them to support the BC kelp industry!
We have worked with West Coast Kelp for our kelp ‘seeds’ for a few years and it’s always a pleasure to work with them.
After doing tests in the past, we implemented the first phase of our kelp farm last year. It was our biggest outplanting by far and we were really happy to work with WCK for this endeavor. They gave us great tips throughout the process (from sori patch harvest to storing the kelp spools) to make sure we could reach the maximum yield with our spools, and we did.
We are stoked to keep working with WCK for the upcoming farming season, not only for their professionalism and deliveries, but also for their passion for kelp. WCK is definitely the place to go for all your kelp nursery needs!
